This month we are going to be talking about Roofs 101
Why Roofs are important
The roof is one of the most important systems of the house. Aside from a roof providing structure and weatherproofing to a property you should understand that it also cools the home (in the case of single-family homes).
How the Roofs material insulates the home
Surprisingly the Roof insulates the home 2 ways. The first is with the material used whereas the second is with the attic ventilation.
Let’s break it down, the materials that are used on your roof can reflect heat in different ways. Some are more expensive to install and some are cheaper. They all play a factor. Albeit most will use standard composite shingles (Gray/Left side) while others that plan to be in the home for a while may opt for a metal roof (Green/Right side). See Below.
Next, The home breathes through the attic using the roof’s vents. The way it works is your Soffit vents draw cool air into the attic (These must stay in good shape). Meanwhile, warm air is exhausted through the ridge vents. If you don’t have enough ventilation it will cause your air conditioning to work harder to cool the home. You can quickly tell a roof’s age if they still have the older turbine-style vents vs the newer ridge vent. The diagrams below show how air should flow.
Final tip: Remember composite roofs only last 15-20 years. If your roof is around that age consider replacing it.
